The Planetary Science, B.S., Curriculum

The B.S. planetary science provides a broad, rigorous education in the basic physical and mathematical sciences as a foundation for successful entry into any of the many subfields of modern space science activity.

You'll begin with a strong foundation in physics, introductory space science and chemistry. As you progress, you'll dive deeper into physics, mathematics and planetary science.

Research is integral to the curriculum, culminating in your senior laboratory course and presentation of your research at the Student Design Showcase.

You will take courses such as:

A Vibrant Research Environment

At Florida Tech, you will have many opportunities to undertake exciting collaborative research with a peer or professor or work independently on a topic of your own choosing.

You’ll have access to the Olin Physical Sciences Center, which houses the Ortega Observatory, a geospace laboratory with a cleanroom for spacecraft instrumentation projects and a high bay physics research hall for space systems and high-energy physics research.

Florida Tech is a founding institution and member of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) ensuring we have regularly scheduled access to a network of three 1-meter class telescopes on the Canary Islands, at Kitt Peak National Observatory and Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory.

Students enjoy an exciting and enriching research environment working alongside faculty who explore a broad range of interesting topics.

Astronomy and astrophysics research spans wavebands from radio to gamma-rays, including observations with the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton and ground-based telescopes such as the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias, the Gemini Observatory, the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and others.

Researchers are involved with the Juno, Parker Solar Probe and Voyager missions, development of telescope instrumentation and high-dynamic range imagers for future space observatories.

Planetary science research includes numerical modeling of atmospheric dynamics, cloud physics and weather processes in planetary atmospheres of terrestrial, giant and exoplanets.

To understand Solar System formation and evolution and to support exploration missions, researchers study atmospheric response to asteroid and comet impacts, severe stellar wind variations and electrical discharges.

Planetary Science Capstone Research

Research plays a vital role in planetary science, and senior capstone projects are a key component of every degree at Florida Tech. You'll present your capstone at the Northrop Grumman Engineering and Science Student Design Showcase, offering a chance to share your work with peers, faculty, industry leaders and the community.

Students select topics of interest for their projects, such as:
